Taskers, the UK’s Largest Independent DIY & Home Store, has teamed up with New-Homes to help give you our top 10 tips on styling your new home. This week, Angela Armstrong from Taskers takes a look at sofas and chairs to make sure you pick the right one!

Tip Number 2 – Time to put your feet up

Buying the perfect sofa or chair means finding the ideal combination of style, comfort, quality and value for money. With many different sofa and chair styles to choose from, in many more sizes, colours, leathers and fabrics than there has been before, there is something out there for everyone.

Think about the look you’re after. You will need to choose the colour, shape of your sofa or chair and also the style of your upholstery. Decide between leather or fabric or even new ranges of velvet that are available, which are the new on trend item.

Shape, Size & Style

Choosing the shape, size and style of your sofas and chairs will have a huge impact on the look and feel of your room. Choosing the right size is important, it’s important to make sure your furniture is in proportion to the dimensions of the room.

It is important to think about the configuration of the furniture in the room. Two small sofas will look very different to one large sofa with chairs, so think about what will work best for you and your family.

Style is a matter of personal taste, and you’ll probably recognise what you love when you see it, so it is a good idea to look at as many different styles as you can.

Leather – only leather upholstery can claim to improve with time, developing a character all of its own. Each hide is unique.

Faux Leather – Leather Lux is man-made to match the texture, colour and feel of family friendly leathers like corrected grain. It’s often combined with real leather so Leather Lux gives you a great looking, sofa at outstanding value for money.

Fabric – when you’re choosing a fabric, it is important to consider what is most practical for your home. If you have children or pets, or if the sofa or chair is to be situated in a ‘heavy traffic’ area of your home, then you might wish to choose a tough, tightly woven, heavier weight and more durable fabric.

Whatever fabric or leather you choose, it’s important to care for it properly, to prolong the life of your upholstery.

Additional Enhancementscushions

Many sofas and chairs come with co-ordinating scatter cushions but you can also enhance your look with extra cushions and also a pair of matching curtains to help you create a relaxed look and vary your décor. After all, your sofa and chair should last you for years, so by adding extra cushions this can help you keep them updated.
