There are lots of opportunities to enjoy music. There are the famous male voice choirs and the Welsh National opera as well as festivals, such as the Cardiff Big Weekend festival, the UK's biggest annual open air celebration of international music and the Brecon Jazz festival.

You can learn about country dance at the National Museum of Welsh life and join in Britain's largest folk dance festival, Urdd Eisteddfod at Gwyl Ifan. Ballet fans can enjoy the talents of companies such as Ballet Wales, based at Newpor,t and Ballet Russe in Swansea. The North Wales Theatre is based in Llandudno.

 

Welsh landscapes, pottery and porcelain and works by Old Masters and impressionists are housed at the National Museum and Gallery at Cardiff, while the Museum of Modern Art at Machynllen exhibits works by Welsh painter Kyffin Williams.

Wales is the country of chapels, and St David's Cathedral in the eponymous city honours the missionary who became the patron saint of Wales. The Church of Wales has ancient roots in the missions of St David and St Illtud.

Numerous castles dot the country such as Harlech Castle, a World Heritage site, Grosmont Castle in Monmouthshire, Caldicot Castle, a medieval fortress near the Bristol Channel, Dolforwyn Castle overlooking the Severn valley and the 13th century Dolbadarn Castle.

 

Economy

Cardiff is the main commercial and administrative centre.

The country's dominant employers are the services industry, the public sector, manufacturing, construction and the retail and hotels industries.

Transport

The international airport at Cardiff is a convenient departure point for Europe. There are other airports at Swansea and Haverfordwest. The nearest airport for North Wales is Manchester.

Frequent trains run to South Wales from London Paddington and to North Wales from London Euston.

Travel by road to South Wales via the M4, to the middle Wales via the M54 and to North Wales on the A55 Coastal Westway.
