Wales, surrounded on three sides by the sea, is a mix of coastline and mountains. It has twenty two counties: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath, Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, Wrexham. Some 2.75 million people live in Wales. The most populated cities are Cardiff with 280,000 inhabitants, Swansea with 180,000, and Newport with 135,000 residents.

Wales has been a principality for centuries although today the Prince of Wales plays no role in the country's governance.

The UK Parliament is responsible for primary legislation in Wales. Since it was first elected in 1999, the Welsh Assembly has the power to develop and implement policy and make secondary legislation in certain areas.

Lifestyle

Wales has coastlines and beaches, mountains, rivers and lakes, making it ideal for a range of activities and outdoor pursuits.

Trekking, mountain biking and surfing are all popular and Wales is one of Britain's favourite walking destinations with regular walkers and climbers in Snowdonia.

Others travel to spot puffins along the coast and wetlands of the Isle of Anglesey.

Rugby is the traditional national sport, while football, athletics and golf are also prominent. The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has hosted football games such as the FA Cup and the Worthington Cup.

Foodies can head to Pemberton's Welsh Chocolate Farm in St Clears for handmade chocolates, Nantybwla Farm in Carmarthen for cows' milk cheeses and Swansea Market for Welsh specialities and seafood including cockles, seaweed and clams. There is also the Welsh Whisky Distillery in South Brecon Beacons.

A thriving club scene exists in the main cities and towns with Cardiff's International Arena serving as the main pop venue.
