The natural beauty of the South West, including its two National Parks, makes the region the most popular destination for domestic tourists wanting to visit some of the UK's rarest and most endangered habitats.

The counties of the South West are Gloucestershire, the West of England (the former Avon), Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Nearly 5 million people live in the region.

The historic port of Bristol, Bournemouth, Plymouth and Poole are the major urban centres in what is a predominantly rural region.

Other notable cities and towns include regency Cheltenham, historic Roman Gloucester, industrial Swindon, as well as Exeter, Salisbury and Taunton.

Lifestyle

This is the UK's maritime region, bound by the Atlantic Ocean, the English Channel and the Bristol Channel. It contains nearly half the UK's designated swimming waters and has milder weather than the rest of the country.

It also boasts the English Riviera, in Cornwall, the ideal place to try out surfing before watching the sunset at a beach cafe.

The area and the choice of universities in Bath, Bristol and Exeter attract students from all over. These cities are also popular commercial centres.

Sports fans can visit Gloucestershire, internationally famous for rugby and cricket, Cheltenham Racecourse, home to the Gold Cup and the National Hunt Festival, and Bath, also famous for rugby.

Throughout the region, there are many farmers' markets which sell local produce such as cheeses, cider, wine and pies. These are popular with both locals and tourists.
