The North West's reputation for radical thought and popular culture has changed the course of history at numerous times over the last 200 years, and it continues to shape developments in England. The area's legendary friendliness and impressive nightlife and music events also make it a top attraction for international visitors.

The North West consists of five counties, Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside, and has a population of over 7 million people. Although 80% of the land is rural, the region boasts some of the UK's best-known cities, including Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster.

In the regions's cities, there are many live music venues, clubs, restaurants, cafes and bars, ranging from traditional pubs to the latest designer-chic cafes. Indeed, Liverpool and Manchester are renowned for their trend-setting nightclubs and music scene.

Shoppers can visit the boutiques of Manchester and Liverpool, the friendly antique shops in Lake District and historic Chester, and the area's designer outlets.


Outside the cities, there is plenty to explore in the countryside. From the great natural beauty of the Lake District to the unspoilt countryside of Lancashire's Ribble Valley, there is a variety of extraordinary landscapes in which to enjoy walking, fishing, sailing, mountain climbing, paragliding,biking and surfing. There are famous gardens, woodlands, orchards, hills and fells, and wild moorland to explore. You can also potter around charming Lakeland towns and villages and learn about the history of the region at its castles and historical house.

There are plenty of other family attractions. The Blackpool Illuminations, in the UK's most popular coastline resort, is now a six-mile long extravaganza and one of Europe's most spectacular light shows. Among the other attractions are the Blackpool Tower and the Pepsi Max Big One - one of the world's tallest and fastest roller coasters. Take it all in as you stroll along the famous Golden Mile, past the Sea Life Centre, the Grand Theatre, the Opera House and lively arcades.

And for those passionate about sport, the region is home to two of the world's top football teams, Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as top class events in horseracing, cricket, rugby and athletics.

Culture And Heritage

The North West, and Liverpool and Manchester in particular, are rich in culture and heritage. There are award winning museums, galleries, theatres and innovative cultural events which keep on pulling in the crowds. Liverpool has been declared Europe's capital of culture in 2008, a distinction which looks set to bring an influx of tourists and provide a boost to the local economy.

There is a strong musical heritage - the Beatles and the Stone Roses both came from the region; while the nightclubs Cream and the Hacienda had a tremendous influence on the development of England's clubbing scene.

The cities and their surrounding areas also boast some of the most impressive and spectacular architecture in Europe. In Liverpool, there is St George's Hall, for example, the finest neo-classical building in Europe.
